What is it?

The Riddles is another Mutable Instruments module that I make in the "Modular in a Week" series. This is another "clone" that I have designed. It is as closely resembling the original in both design and parts, except for the fact that it is a through hole variant, using only throughhole components.

Liquid filter

3 filter modes are available: 2-pole band-pass, 2-pole low-pass, and 4-pole low-pass.

Self-oscillation is available for all modes and produces a clean sine-wave on the LP4 output. Unlike many classic 4-pole designs, this filter does not suffer from “loudness drop” when resonance is increased. The resonance loudness compensation circuit brings a slight tone coloration reminiscent of the Roland SH/Jupiter filters, with a very round and “liquid” resonance.

The 4-pole low-pass output is additionally sent to a VCA. This makes Ripples a good “final stage” module for an inexpensive/space-constrained subtractive synthesis synth voice.

Why did you make it?

In my ongoing youtube Series "Modular in a Week" I am working through the Mutable Instruments Open Source modules that you can do that is MCU driven. But looking at my rack and all my control modules, and not so many sound altering modules I decided to make a few of those designs aswell.

What makes it special?

Well if you want a fully functional Mutable Instruments Ripples, but dont want to pay for the original on the second hand market and you dont feel that Surface mount soldering is for you, then this kit could be an affordable way to go.

There is a component pack that you can buy for this aswell, however to keep the cost down I suggest buying the AS2164 or V2164D from another vendor, for example Erica Synths, because if you buy from them you can at the same time buy a bunch of AS2164 for the Veils and Blinds clones, but also buy the components yo build the Erica Synth DIY Polyvoks VCF and Dual VCA, and even the DIY Bassline, and buy the PCB-kits for these modules aswell. As a way to keep shipping down in these tariff times... ;)
