What is it?

It's a pocket size "album", a starvation synth powered by a 6x6cm colorful and semi transparent dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC), it could be a noise generator for your CV inputs or just a conceptual sculpture! The DSSC glass is made with graphical configuration to series a 6x6 sub-cell array to harvest around 3 - 5V under the full noon sunlight, which is sufficient to power a starvation synth. Starvation is a very low power consuming synth that can give you very organic and non-linear noise. The content of the experimental noise can be altered mainly by the value of the 3 capacitor in the circuits. There are two audio jacks for starvation output and the raw output of the DSSC glass.

Please be aware that this is an experimental, handmade solar cell artwork. Its performance and lifespan naturally vary (usually from a few months up to a few years). Thank you for supporting this ongoing research practice.

Why did you make it?

This device was a result of my residency in SGMK and KUBU artist in residence program in Zurich and Finland. I am a self-taught DSSC maker, I am researching in making customized transparent solar glass and using them for alternative purposes like greenhouse window, agrivoltaic, light-sound converter, optical computing or cold wallet for blockchain. I am also a fan of open semiconductor.

What makes it special?

This is a DIY DSSC with W-type series configuration. Unlike the conventional silica solar cell, DSSC is semi-transparent and its electrical configuration can be made graphical and dyed with natural dye. It's an artistic photovoltaic glass that can power small things and it's made in my home lab.
