What is it?

The MIDI8d Plus is a 4HP wide, simple and versatile Eurorack module that can output 4 Digital gates and 4 PWM analog CV, from a MIDI TRS input connection.

MIDI8d+ is an upgrade from MIDI8d. 4 digital gates have been transformed to filtered and buffered PWM outputs. 3 outputs have 8-bit resolution, while output #5 is 16-bit resolution.

The firmwares are compatible between MIDI8d and MIDI8d+ But, due to the filtering network to remove artefacts from the PWM signals, the 4 analog outputs are slightly slower than the pure 4 digital ones.

If you only need fast rise, digital outputs I recommend using MIDI8d.

The core of the MIDI8d+ is the classic Arduino Nano (not included).

Different firmwares (Arduino sketches) can be uploaded into the Arduino, to adapt or completely change the behaviour of the MIDI8d+.

Typical uses are:

8 Drums outputs, reacting to MIDI Channel 10 (notes 36 to 43)
MIDI Clock ticks, with various time divisions and Start/Stop Gate outputs
MIDI to CV converter
and many more!

The module is made of 2 PCBs:

the Front PCB supporting all the jack connectors
the Rear PCB supporting the Arduino Nano and the power input.

The MIDI input jack is a Stereo (TRS type A) connector.

The boards come with pre-assembled SMD components. The only remaining components to solder are classic Through Hole.

Easy build, but no ready-made firmware

Was OK to build, not too complicated, just remember to solder the connector befor soldering the 3.5mm jacks.
I was a but dissappointed that there is no pre-compiled firmware with useful functions, but only some examples that have to be heavily customized and compiled.

Thank you for your review.

I'm really sorry to hear that you were disappointed by the absence of a pre-compiled firmware.

This module is dedicated to builders that are relatively confident with Arduino and its programming environment. But maybe I should emphasize more on this point.

It is also difficult to provide firmware that can adapt to everyone's needs on a module and interface as simple as those of the MIDI8d (or the UC Divider).
Maybe I could help you write one that can suit your specific needs? Feel free to contact me if you want.

The sketches provided are examples of simple features. They are nevertheless functional. And since the firmwares are open source, everyone can share improvements or new features.

I also thank you very much for pointing out that the inter-board connectors must be assembled before the jacks. I will soon add a more detailed step-by-step assembly procedure for the MIDI8d (Plus) and the UC Divider, which all share this kind of construction technique.

I hope you will have fun anyway.
