It's a shield with an MCP23017 pin expander on it. It connects to your board through the I2C bus, and lets you have additional 16 digital pins. The address selection jumpers let you stack up to 8 such shields at once, for a total of 128 extra pins!
The ESP8266 is a very nice chip, and I especially like the D1 Mini development boards, however, they always have too few digital pins to do anything more advanced. This shield makes it very easy to expand the capabilities of this little board.
It's small, it stacks, it fits the D1 Mini and any compatible board, and it's very convenient to use.
