I wanted to build a low-voltage UPS for my brother's cable modem and WiFi router.
I purchased a commercial solar charge controller (not naming names, but it is a big name), and just had quite the fiasco with the commercial charge controller. It was unpredictable, did strange things, don't work well in UPS mode, buzzed the power supply, and even fried my Apple Airport Extreme base stations.
Then I got yours instead, and it worked perfectly, first time, every time, and it handles all the edge cases - so much better than any commercial charger. Your board is truly beautiful, clean, and well-designed - perfect board. The commercial board had all these displays and buttons, but it was really because it was stupid and didn't work well and required monitoring. Yours, on the other had, I really, really appreciate the minimalist design of yours.
When a solar charge controller does exactly what it is supposed to do, why do you need a display? The calm breathing LED is perfect! I wish everything was designed this well! Plus I can get all the minutia of data if I want to - there's a header right on the board for that.
I can feel the passion you poured into that board. It is amazing.
I ordered 3 more, and of course have identically good experiences with them.
Thanks so much for sharing your most excellent solar charge controller! Thanks also for sharing with us on hack-a-day how you made it, and how thoroughly you tested it too. I hope other makers will be inspired!
