Soldering Iron Controller for JBC - v3.3
Small and portable DC powered soldering iron controller that works with JBC T245 handpiece and C245 cartridges.
The v3.3 is an iterative update to our controller. Here is what's changed on this version:
All modules fits right into your controller, takes no extra space. They are easily user replaceable (only requires 2mm hex/Allen key[not included] for screws).
The JBC C245 cartridge design and electrical characteristics is different from other soldering tips. This cartridge design made difficult to driving with DC. Previously our controllers used the soft ground approach, combined with the unusual cartridge internal design made the shield floating at DC potential while driving. It had some unique advantages but due to popular request with v3.3, soldering cartridge and the handle ring is always connected to DC ground. You can connect the controller DC ground to PE if you need it, thus earthing the tip. The aluminum controller casing is also connected to ground.
Do not power anything other than the controller using the same DC power supply and/or do not ever try to solder anything that connected to same DC power supply, this will damage your device AND the controller by making a direct short.
v3.3 brings electrical handle detection support and also keeps the microswitch option that's available on previous models. If you want to use a stand/holder; you have two options. Please note that there is no plug&play solution and all options need some DIY effort.
In addition to internal JST-XH 2-pin male header for stand detection, v3.3 also brings stand detection pin to the front panel, inside of the soldering iron handle connector pin 6 (middle pin - unused for T245) for tidier setup.
Electrical detection for stands that have a handle connector on it: Clone stands for JBC T245 available from Asian vendors. They mimic the original stand design, therefore there is electrical connection on their metal handle holder and cartridge changers. The stand wiring is chained so you connect the stand to the controller, then the handpiece to stand. If you rewire the stand with T245 female connector (same Hirose connector as your T245 handle) you can plug this stand to controller and achieve electrical stand detection without using extra cables; because v3.3 provides this input to the front panel. This means no additional cabling and it is the cleanest solution possible.
For standalone holders: If you happen to have a stand that fits the T245 handle, you can mod it for using the detection feature. Stand detection works via empty white 2-pin JST-XH connector in the assembled units. If you short these two pins (say, with a microswitch), the controller detects it and will enter the "standby" mode and lowers the temperature, which is selectable on the menu. The microswitch should mount in a way that closes (or opens) when the iron handle put on the stand. Some Hakko stands already uses this "microswitch" type design.
If your stand has conductive mating surface for the handle, you can use the electrical detection feature. Pin 1 of JST-XH connector is the detection input. If you touch this pin to handle's metal ring (or tip itself, but not recommended because the tip is obviously hot), it'll detect the stand.
Suggested interfacing for the stand detection is wiring the JST-XH plug to a 3.5mm jack and drilling a small hole on the back panel for it. We can do it for you for an additional fee.
