My version of a tachometer for a spindle or in this case a HDD motor.

Why did you make it?

I wanted a handy and thin tachometer plus I always try to make something new and try new things.

What makes it special?

Because it is made by me! No, joke aside having too many new ideas can be a burden sometimes when you are not able to keep up. Of course you can use this to measure the rpm of any rotating shaft by just placing a reflective or non reflective material depending on the material. In this case I just put a piece of black tape underneath the shiny platter so the IR sensor can pick up a signal.

This particular code is setup for the HDD motor depending on your needs the code will be different. Please get in touch with me if you have any questions or something is unclear to you. Thank you.

The size of the tachometer is 28 mm x 52 mm with only being 3 mm thick.

Very useful tachometer that can fit in the smallest of space

I received the tachometers in good condition. I was a bit confused about the wiring at first and sent a question to Hayri, who responded right away and answered my question. I have a Sherline lathe and mill with 10,000rpm spindles and I've been looking for a economical tach for them. I have found my solution! These units are amazingly small and still manage to be very bright and readable. I tested them against my handheld tach and they were very accurate, they will also be much more useful than the handheld. Their small size will allow me to put them just about anywhere I want, nice feature in a cramped shop. I like the fact that you just apply power and it operates, no menus or garbage to bog it down.

Wishes:
I would like to see more detailed documentation. Is it possible to send the readings out the serial port? It would be nice to use the data in MACH4 or similar CNC packages.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for taking your time to write the review.

To be able to read the data also serially my USB adapter would need to be attached permanently to the PCB.

Don't know about Mach4 but there is a code that can be used with Grbl and needs to be connected between the PC and the CNC controller.

You are right about documentation, I just never get around to write one for every product.
