Volvo 8622185 Airbag Clockspring (Slip Ring) Repair Kit — Set of Two Flex Cables

Compatible with Volvo S60, V70, XC70, and S80 P2 models up to 2004 (vehicles without DSTC).

If you’re seeing an airbag warning light or your steering wheel buttons have stopped working, there’s a high chance the flex cables inside the clockspring have broken.

Your options are usually:

• Buy a brand-new clockspring for several hundred dollars,

• Gamble on a used unit that may fail at any time,

• Or repair your existing slip ring with brand-new replacement flex cables.

This kit includes two high-quality flex cables designed specifically for the Volvo 8622185 clockspring, allowing you to restore full functionality without replacing the entire assembly.

Before purchasing, please ensure that:

• This is the correct repair kit for your clockspring model (see pictures below).

• You have access to a soldering iron.

• You have a multimeter for continuity testing.

• You have the necessary tools for clockspring disassembly.

• You have small piece of thin double-sided adhesive tape.

• You possess the technical skills required for this type of repair.

Make sure to take clear photos during every disassembly step — these will be extremely helpful when reassembling the slip ring.

Use some thin, flat screwdrivers to carefully unlatch the plastic hooks during disassembly:

Pull off the old flex cable and remove any debris before installing the new one. We did not include the small cutouts in the flex cable design, so you will need to create them carefully yourself — or alternatively, you can trim a small piece of plastic from the harness to make room. We plan to address this in a future revision of the kit.

At this stage, we had no issues soldering the flex cable to the harness, but we believe that pre-tinning the solder pads on the harness may make the process even easier. Don’t forget to use a generous amount of quality flux — for example, KESTER TSF-6592 — to ensure clean, reliable solder joints. During all soldering steps, make sure not to overheat the harness or the flex cable. The flex is made of durable polyimide and is fairly resistant to heat, but the plastic parts of the harness can melt if overheated — so work carefully.

It’s always good practice to clean any remaining flux with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol to keep the repair area clean.

Now move on to the second harness and repeat the same process with the other flex cable. Again, you’ll need to create small cutouts in the flex cable — or remove a bit of plastic from the harness — to ensure a proper fit. Pull off the old flex cable and remove any debris before installing the new one.

Now move to the opposite end of the flex cables to continue the installation. Unlatch plastic hooks and disassemble harness and remove plastic stiffener:

Now pull off the old flex cable and remove any debris then replace it with the new one. The procedure is the same as before: make the small cutouts (or trim the harness), pre-tin the pads, apply flux, and solder everything in place.

Always check continuity with a multimeter and verify both ends of both flex cables. Use the test points shown in the images. Data flex test points: Air Bag flex test points:

Now place an air bag flex into a holder and add a little piece of thin dual-sided adhesive tape to attach plastic stiffener:

Install the plastic stiffener, ensuring the bumps align with the flex cable slots.

Insert a harness of data flex:

Oops! Found another issue with this slip ring. Make sure to fix that too...

Now the funny part. Let's reassemble all parts back together. Be patient. Reassemble the slip ring carefully, using your photos as reference.

Before installing it back into the vehicle, make sure the slip ring is centered. It should have 2.5 turns in each direction. The yellow indicator shows the centered position.

That’s it! Please remember: the slip ring is a critical safety component. Do not drive the vehicle if any airbag warning lights remain on.
