What is it?

The ButterStick is an FPGA development board to experiment with high-speed interfaces. It features a Lattice ECP5 FPGA, DDR3 memory, 3 high-speed SYZYGY interfaces, Gigabit Ethernet, and High-speed USB.

Why did you make it?

I wanted to experiment with high-speed interfaces (HDMI, LVDS displays, MIPI) and camera interfaces (parallel CMOS, LVDS). The SYZYGY interface looked perfect, but there were no boards featuring it based on the Lattice ECP5, so I built this.

What makes it special?

The on-board FPGA is an Lattice ECP5 which is fully supported by the open source FPGA toolchain. Along with the list of features:

Lattice ECP5 FPGA
Dual rank DDR3 memory
3 high-speed SYZYGY interfaces
Gigabit Ethernet (1Gbps)
High-speed USB (480Mbps)

Boards from the ButterStick project, well packaged

ButterStick r1.0 boards as described. They arrived after a couple of weeks (worldwide shipping) in sensible packaging. Thanks Greg!

I suspect this design is pushing the limits of the manufacturing service used, so it's advisable to buy multiple boards and inspect them yourself if you're planning to populate one. I ordered two.
