Read More…A drop-in replacement keyboard for Tandy/Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 3 computers using modern mechanical keyswitches. Installation instructions available at jaycrutti.com. Includes ribbon cable and optional keys for limited customization. Can also be used as a generic keyboard for other retro-computer hobby machines that will support an 8x8 keyboard matrix.
Many keyboards on these machines experience failures due to worn carbon contacts and other faults. While the contacts can be serviced and restored, it is a labor intensive process requiring desoldering and removal of each key switch. Since the switches can wear out again over time and parts are no longer commonly available, it's better to use modern MX type mechanical switches to aid future serviceability and enable some personal customization too.
It tries to be as close to the original as practical, while offering some small improvements to match modern keyboard conventions. It adds some bonus features like extra keys that the original lacked, capability for a Power On LED under the Reset button, and attachment pads for adding a 9-pin Atari style joystick. The keyboard uses Gateron Pro 3.0 Brown MX keyswitches, giving it an excellent typing feel.
