What is it?

Make an Arduino-compatible clock that displays time as HH.MM.SS on a 8-character vintage-style yellow LED matrix micro display.

Why did you make it?

This is the only kit on the market that uses the HDSP intelligent display. The kit is now 100% through hole, and there is a choice of USB connector: straight (cable plugged in at the bottom of the board) or right angle (cable plugged in through the back of the board), see this post.

What makes it special?

Small form factor, easy to assemble (suitable for beginners), Arduino-compatible, hackable and re-programmable, low current consumption (30mA average), useful desk gadget.

The kit comes with ATmega328 processor pre-programmed. Bootloader uses 8MHz internal clock. Kit includes DS1307 RTC, with battery backup (keeps time even when clock not powered). Clock board plugs directly into a phone cradle/dock charger with miniB USB connector (use/source your own, not included in the kit).

The display could be also installed vertically through the use of a right-angle male header, as shown in the last two photos.

A Quick, Fun Project

With the COVID lockdowns, I have had time to build several kits over the past few months. I stumbled across this particular kit, and thought it would be a fun build. I was not disappointed. The order was shipped quickly, and arrived in a nicely padded envelope. The online instructions were easy to follow, but the kit was simple enough such that I really didn't need to reference the instructions too much. It was built and running in less than an hour. The HDSP display is a little different than some of the other ones I have in other clocks I've built, which made this kit unique.

A quirky and different little clok!

I have been led's and clocks since buying my first led in 1969 at a military surplus store in London - it was vey expensive and dim. The kit was well packed in an antistatic bag. Very simple to put together, and it worked no problem. Setting is very simple. If there really are 770 "proverbs" (is "He's dead Jim" ann actual proverb?) in there, it's going to take some time to see them all. Anyway, it will be a good addition to my growing collection of odd digital clocks.
