What is it?

picotracker 2.1 is a palm–sized, open-hardware groovebox: 6-track sample sequencer, 44.1 kHz/16-bit stereo, 15 MB per project, live & step recording, effects, MIDI in/out, 3.5 mm gold-plated audio, USB-C charging, 2650 mAh battery for 8+ hours, and a bright IPS display. Ships as a ready-to-play DIY unit—just add ideas.

Why did you make it?

Q: What's new in this 2.1 hardware version?

A: The differences are actually not significant, detailed below:

1. PCB layout: This was modified by the author, mainly to adapt to the new screen and eliminate the need for soldering during final installation. However, this has actually made PCB manufacturing more difficult.

2. The screen has been changed to IPS material, improving viewing angles compared to version 1.0.

3. The screen frame is made using PCB (actually quite rough; this DIY version didn't adopt it, and a custom panel was made).

4. There's an indicator light for charging when the device is off.

5. Minor improvements to the feel of the casing. In summary, the most noticeable changes are the charging indicator light and the improved screen viewing angles.

Q: What is the sampling capacity, and how long can the samples be stored?

A: Maximum support for 44.1kHz, 16bit, stereo. Each project has a maximum sample size of 15MB. At maximum sampling, the sample length is approximately 90 seconds. For mono, it's 180 seconds; for 8-bit mono, it's 360 seconds. Lowering the sampling rate allows for even longer sample lengths. Sample files support WAV format.

Q: Which option should I buy?

A: All options have the same circuit board and functions. To save money, choose the cheapest one. If you want a mechanical keyboard and are particular about keystrokes, consider the Kailh Chocolate switch version, as it's a bit more expensive. Of course, if you'd like to support me, you can buy the more expensive version.

Q: Want to DIY the case?

A: You can buy a circuit board kit. All kits are pre-flashed, tested, and shipped with a battery. STL model files are available, but a TF card and other services are not included. Confirmation of receipt signifies delivery completion.

The option to solder the switches yourself does not include switches. Please choose your preferred switches. The board is compatible with Cherry MX Low Profile switches and Kailh Choc v1 switches.
