What is it?

The monome 16nx is an open-source 16-fader control surface designed for electronic instruments and devices. Building upon the legacy of the original 16n faderbank, the 16nx features sixteen 60mm faders that send MIDI, CV (0-5V), and I2C signals simultaneously, allowing you to control a wide range of gear from monome norns to modular synthesizers. The "x" denotes this as the second-generation hardware revision, completely redesigned for modern component availability while preserving all original functionality. It's the missing piece for controlling your monome ecosystem, though its utility extends far beyond—it's equally powerful as a standalone MIDI controller, CV source for eurorack modules, or via advanced I2C integration.

Why did you make it?

The original 16n faderbank became an indispensable tool for many electronic musicians, but its core component—the Teensy 3.2 microcontroller—reached end-of-life, making new builds impossible and threatening the controller's future. We created the 16nx to ensure this essential instrument remains available to the community. Additionally, we wanted to create a unified ecosystem of monome-compatible controllers with matching 3D-printed enclosures that share the same design language, allowing builders to assemble a complete, cohesive control setup that feels like a single, integrated system.
