Introducing the Casual Coders Digital Clock. An internet-connected clock that synchronizes with NTP servers to remain accurate at all times, features an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust to room brightness, supports 12- and 24-hour formats, and is fully open source!
This device REQUIRES an internet connection to function. This is by design. It pulls the time from the network. There is no manual way to set this. Once it has pulled the network time, the network could be disconnected, but it will drift rather quickly. A few seconds or so per day.
Upon first boot, and when there is no internet connection available, the clock will host a wireless access point with SSID NiceClock
and password MinesBigger
. This is printed on the rear of the clock's PCB. In this state, it hosts a webpage on 192.168.4.1
which allows you to configure the timezone, network connection, and the minimum/maximum brightness.
Pressing the boot button on the rear of the clock will display the configured IP address instead of the time.
A 3D printed case is optionally available with this clock. It is printed in slate grey PLA. Source files are readily available so you can print this yourself. It does require 2x M2 heatset inserts and 2x M2x~8mm bolts.
This device is essentially a devkit at heart. It's specifically designed for my desired application. That said, JTAG and UART connections are exposed on the rear, and the clock can be easily reprogrammed using the USB-C connector. I encourage you to hack it or to use it for something other than a clock. The hardware and software is fully open source, so you're free to make it display a live subscriber count tick stocks, or something else entirely. Whatever it may be, let us know what you do with this device!
This is a limited run for 8 clocks. Dependent upon demand, we may make more, we may not. Only time will tell!
