What is it?

ESP8266 based soil moisture sensor Wi-Fi enabled. Also provide ambient temperature and humidity sensor.

At the sensor's heart is an ESP8266 WiFi microcontroller clocked at 80 MHz and at 3.3V logic. This microcontroller contains a Tensilica chip core as well as a full WiFi stack. You can program the microcontroller using the Arduino IDE for an easy-to-run Internet of Things core. You can use ESP flasher that an upload code at a blistering 115200 baud for fast development time. It also has auto-reset so no noodling with pins and reset button pressings.

The sensor can upload sensor datas to remote server. We provided example code for uploading to thingspeak.

The project is modifying of the I2C Moisture Sensor project from Miceuz. Thanks for his source code.

What's difference with rev 1.0?

Replace the DHT11 to TMP112 with I2C
Add a jumper for wire GPIO16 and Reset pin
Add a SWITCH for measuring soil sensor or battery voltage
Pinouts compatible with ESPea

Note

Please choose "ESP8266 Flasher Rev2" add-on option if you want to programming the sensor.
Please remove the jumper for GPIO16 if you want to program the board.
Don't insert battery when you program the board.

Really cool little sensor, fantastic support

The sensor seems to work well for now. The only thing missing is a weather-proof case, but that is clearly just not included.

Works like a charm! Now I can pretend I have a green thumb... Next, I just need one with wifi/BT to tweet me so I can keep the outside plants alive.

Long Term Usability

First of all: the product (V2.2) worked as described.
soon I had to replace the double sided tape holding the battery case.
5 month after inserting it into my plant I had to repot it and during that action I would glue battery case, which came off again.
I took it out of soil, cleaned it with water and recognized some blisters near the border of the sensor part.
Then I glued the battery holder. While drying a lot of the green coating of the board by the soil stick came off!

now the product is unusable, because I will not poison the plant with copper.
sad, I could not upload fotos proving that demage.

I think the whole sensor part should be sealed with lacqeur befor adding the parts.

update on 2017.07.17:
It seems that I had wrong estimations, hoped that the shop would replace me that item.
But nothing happend! That's a very bad experience about that product & store.

Code not compile so difficult to understand without a working example.

Not able to re-flash with my own firmware

Haven't been able to re-flash the moisture sensor with my own firmware. The instructions are incomplete or just plain don't work. Do I need to manually pull GPIO0 low or is there a button/switch I can use? No matter what I do with the jumper and button on the board I can't get it to enter bootstrap mode.

As a result I haven't been able to get the sensor to work at all.

Did you remove the jumper for GPIO16 first? The jumper is used for deep sleep. You can find a note about "remove the jumper first before upload firmware" at our wiki. You can also contact us at our support forum. http://bbs.aprbrother.com/c/wifi
