What is it?

This is an easy-to-solder kit that uses only through-hole components. Once fully assembled, it allows you to verify the authenticity and functionality of Z80 microprocessors.

Why did I make it?

I started designing this Z80 NOP Tester after the Zilog Z80 End Of Life announcement on April 15, 2024 and sourcing reliable Z80 microprocessors became increasingly challenging.

What makes it special?

There are other Z80 NOP tester alternatives out there, such as the one on the 8bit-museum website by Stephan Slabihoud.

However, I couldn’t find any with all the features I was looking for in a Z80 Tester, so I added them to my design. These features include:

• A ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) socket, ensuring that you can insert your Z80 IC with minimal force, preventing any damage to the microprocessor.
• A power input with a USB Type B connector instead of the usual micro USB connector, which I found to be less sturdy and durable.
• There is also a JST-XH 2P footprint with a 2.5mm pitch on the PCB that can be used as an alternative 5V power source in case you don't what to use the USB Type B connector.
• A power switch that allows you to easily turn the device on and off without having to unplug it. This is useful if you want to test multiple Z80 chips in one session.
• An adjustable clock generator with a range of approximately 4Hz to 90Hz.
• A total of 21 LEDs, including one for each of the 16 address lines and LEDs for the M1, RFSH, MREQ, RD, and CLK signals. These LEDs provide a comprehensive visual representation of your Z80 microprocessor's operation.
• Multiple test points for CLK, M1, RFSH, MREQ, RD.
• 4 mounting holes in the corners for easy installation in a case.

If you need to verify the authenticity of Z80 microprocessors and you like the sound of the previous features, this kit could be just what you're looking for.

Although this kit does not require soldering any SMD components, good soldering skills are essential for assembly.
