MIDI IN-OUT is an expansion module for Arduino. It provides two ports: MIDI IN and MIDI OUT, to receive and transmit MIDI messagesDesigned by Artis Lab in Italy

In a nutshell, the MIDI OUT port is connected to the Arduino TX port for data transmission; while, the MIDI IN port receives the messages using the Arduino RX port. The circuit for receiving MIDI messages (MIDI IN) uses an integrated circuit (6N137) which provides a photo coupler useful for transferring the MIDI signal from the MIDI instrument to the Arduino, keeping the two devices electrically isolated from each other. In fact, inside the container of this integrated are placed an infrared emitting diode and a receiving photo transistor, also infrared, in this way the signal is transferred, not electrically, but through the optical coupling between the light emitted by the diode and the light intensity detected by the photo transistor.
