The VU-2d is a stereo VU meter, where two channels of audio can be monitored for average level.
Plug a phone, laptop, computer, or any other line level audio device into the VU-2d to start the LED monitoring.
The VU-2d uses 4-pole audio connections so that a microphone signal can be passed through the device.
The output has a volume control that has no effect on the monitoring.
Power is provided via a USB-C port on the back. It requires at least 5V, 150mA to work. [NOTE] Not all USB ports can provide the power required. Some USB ports on computers can provide the power, but others can not. The LEDs will work, but the audio output will be distorted.
There is a brightness control on the side that allows for the user to adjust the brightness of the LEDs from all the way off, to all the way on.
The sensitivity/calibration of the meter can be changed via a trim pot in the back.
OF COURSE I CAN! The VU-2d is an all analog design, zero microcontrollers, and consists of three boards. The main board, and two meter boards. The signal comes in, and gets split between the headphone amplifier, and one of the meter boards (one for both left, and right). The meter boards amplify, rectify, and display the signal on the LEDs mounted to them. The brightness control is also done all analog, where I am generating a triangle wave, amplifying it, and comparing it to the voltage set by the brightness pot to make a PWM signal that can be sent to the LED arrays.
