This is a breakout board for the Bluegiga BLE121LR long range Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) module. While BLE originally was designed for personal area networking for sensors, there are situations, e.g. outdoor thermometers, where longer range is valuable. The BLE121LR module is advertised to extend the range of BLE up to 450 meters. With this board I was able to connect reliably at 100 meters separation with my iPhone 5s (discussion here). Of course, the range you get depends strongly on what other structures and materials in the environment. A compelling aspect of BLE is that apps for both iOS and Android devices can be easily created that directly connect to this module. You can read about how to do that by consulting the book I was a co-author of, Getting Started with Bluetooth Low Energy.
I built this to make experimentation with the BLE121LR module easy to do. It can be used standalone or with an external micro controller. The module is FCC approved for using in a product.
The board is designed to increase the range of the BLE121R while providing easy access to the UART, I2C, SPI, PWM, ADC, and GPIO lines of the BLE121LR. The BLE121LR is easily programmed with just an XML editor, the Bluegiga development software, and a TI CC Debugger. Less than $50 worth of tools are all that's required to get started with this module. A discussion of how to program the BLE121LR is here.
