This little PCB drives El wire without any of the annoying 1-3kHz buzz heard on the typical transformer based inverters. The design removes the noisy transformer most often used in these inverters. It is capable of driving a standard 3M wire to full brightness. The output drives at 320Vpp, at 1.1kHz. It runs best at 5V, but can run down to 3V with reduced brightness. The two best ways to power this device is either a USB plug for permanently installer art or liPoly battery for costumes. This circuit enables a noise free EL-Wire Halloween Masks, Bike Helmets, Safety Vests and costumes. It will run well on a 4.2V LiPoly battery, about 6hrs on a 500mAHr battery.
It comes fully assembled by hand except for the EL connector, the PCB is designed for the smaller JST-PH(any connector with wires can be soldered to the PCB) connector found on Sparkfun's EL wire. The power connection is left up to the user, it can be hardwired to a USB cable or a JST can be placed on it for a LIPoly Battery.
I like making EL wire decorations, I got fairly frustrated with the noise level. Many attempts were made to reduce the noise of standard inverters and most people using EL wire have tried as well with little success. I eventually realized that the inverter needed a redesign. So that is what I did, it took 3 major design iterations to get good enough for most applications.
The most unique feature is the quiet, it does not make any noise at all.
