This is a keyboard replacement for a Commodore PET 2001 computer. It can be fitted to the original Commodore PET 2001 case (the one with the chicklet keyboard and built in datasette), or can be used for bench testing other computers in the PET range. The keyboard mapping is the normal/graphics keyboard, so that suits anything which originally had a keyboard with symbols on the top row and numbers on the keypad, which is usually the 40 column systems. It is not compatible with systems with the business keyboard (the one with the more usual 1/!, 2/" etc. on the top row and the smaller keypad), at least without a modified ROM.
The original keyboards are difficult to source, and generally suffer from bad contacts. I built this more for use on a test bench when testing Commodore PET boards, but it can be used as a replacement, fitting in the case where the original keyboard was, or can be mounted inside the case, with the original on show, and open up the hinged lid to type on the replacement keyboard.
I have spent a lot of time trying to replicate the key marking with all the graphical systems and the deviations from the standard font. The layout has been designed to match the original, and the PCB design has been carefully tweaked to make fitting the switch easier, but still holding them in place and flat, ready to be soldered.
These are available as a PCB only, as a kit of parts, or fully assembled and tested. The kit and assembled versions can be fitted with a cable from a dead keyboard (even a C64 or VIC20 one as they use the same cable), or a ribbon cable is optionally available.
The switches supplied are quality Panasonic 'Light Touch Switches', which are good for typing, giving a positive response but without being hard to press.
The PCB is available in white and now black. The black version has some minor improvements, the connector is now set back from the keys (more like the original), and the screw holes are plated.
No Commodore PETs are included, the photos of the original keyboard are for reference. The new keyboard is the PCB with tactile switches on.
