What is it?

This is a board which plugs into the userport on a PET, Mini PET, VIC20, MiniVIC or C64.

It provides 8 LEDs which are controllable from BASIC or assembler projects by poking the VIA or CIA chips.

Sample test programs are provided to demonstrate a simple count up sequence, or you can make a Larsen scanner.

Why did you make it?

It is useful for testing userport outputs on these machines. It also doubles as a power indication when bench testing boards.

LEDs are powered from the port, and modern LEDs are low current so they light through the pullup resistors on the port, which is initially set as an input.

To drive the LEDs, first set the port to all outputs with one POKE:

POKE 59459,255 (PET)
POKE 37138,255 (VIC)
POKE 56579,255 (C64)

Then write a value to the port which is displayed by the LEDs as a binary value. There is no inversion, so write 0 ($00, 0000 0000) to turn all the LEDs off, and write 255 ($FF, 1111 1111) to turn all the LEDs on.

What options are available

This is available as a kit or assembled, and with a choice of LED colours if you don't like the standard red ones.

No computers or other accessories are included, only the Userport LEDs board.
