This project is meant to make your life easier and to avoid potential reworks in the field! With a built-in ArduinoISP for programming, you can easily program a socketed ATMEGA32 with the on-board socket or you can use the on-board 6-pin header with a Tag-Connect or ICSP cable to program an off-board device.
I got tired of needing program and flash brand new ATMEGA32s after they had been installed on my designs. With that issue in mind I tried to figure out a way to easily program a new chip while also being able to verify that the chip was working before installing it onto my other designs. This design solves that exact problem!
This design has an on-board astable clock generator, digital counter, and ADC that is used to generate a reference analog voltage for the socketed IC. There are two LEDs connected to the socketed IC that allow for quick and easy debug of the chip before permanently installing it onto a different design. There is also a load switch that allows the programming IC to perform a hard power reset on the socketed chip.
