Everybody knows that REAL computers have a wooden case. So if your RC2014 has an inferiority complex sitting next to your Apple I, Northstar Horizon or Video Genie EG3003, then fear not! A range of laser cut wooden cases is now available!
This case elegantly sandwiches the Backplane 8 between two outer sheets of poplar plywood, with an inner layer of ply, perspex and cardboard. The cardboard gasket protects the solder joints on the underside of the PCB from pushing in to the base layer (Although you may need to trim down the barrel jack terminals). On top of the PCB a 3mm layer of ply protects the small components, then a layer of clear perspex works as a light-pipe allowing the power LED to glow through the corner. Roughing up the edge of the perspex with sandpaper will give a more dispersed LED glow if you wish. Then on top the 8 slots are exposed for you to add the modules. The pin descriptions are cut in to the top layer so you can see where each signal is available. Supplied with all fittings required. No backplane or other RC2014 components are included.
As with the Poplar Ply option, the Perspex Backplane 8 case sandwiches the PCB between layers of Perspex. Available in red, green, blue, yellow or black, a clear layer is used below the top layer so the power indication LED can glow though the corner. A Spectrum colour option is also available - Note that this is an homage to the colour flash on the ZX Spectrum of red, yellow, green and blue, in recognition of the influence the Sinclair machines have had on the RC2014. There is no clear layer on the Spectrum colour option, so the power LED will not be visible (There was no power LED on the early ZX Spectrums either!). Other colour options or combinations may be available at extra cost and longer waiting times, so please contact me to discuss this.
Give your Universal Micro Keyboard a sturdy feel with this poplar plywood enclosure. A base layer is held off of the PCB by 4 11mm standoffs, while above a layer of 1.6mm cardboard or 3mm plywood* protect the solder joints, with a layer on top which provides support around each of the keys. A laminated key cap sheet on the top makes each key clearly visible. Supplied with all fittings required. No keyboard or other RC2014 components are included.
[*] Note that if you fitted the tactile key switches flush with the PCB you will need to use the 1.6mm cardboard layer. If you mounted them proud of the PCB then use the 3mm plywood layer instead. If you have customised the layout of your keyboard, you can download [Link coming soon] the key cap sheet in dxf format to modify and print your own.
Important Note Please be aware that wood is a natural product, so no two enclosures are identical. Slight defects may appear, and scorch marks from the laser cutter may be present. Poplar is a very light coloured material and responds very well to varnish or coloured dyes. (See the photo with "Antique Pine" varnish applied)
This listing is for the enclosure & fittings only. No RC2014, backplane, keyboard or any other components are included.
