Finding a display that is both small and iconic, something with meaning in a retro style... not easy. The HPDL1414 has always been a mark in the 90s futuristic displays. A display is great, but a programable uC with a display is way better. Perfect for a clock, so the uC has been chosen having a RTC peripheral ability in mind, this way can be used as a watch or an RTC to a coupled system. It may be used as a central connected to a uart running bus or as a peripheral, or anything else, like a simple clock.
HPDL1414 is a reference display. It has been used from "hollywood bomb time counters" to simple pagers. It has a red glow to it that makes it as special as a nixie or a vfd.
