If you want to really understand how a computer works, one of the best ways to do that is to build your own. Modern computers are orders of magnitude more complex than the comparatively simple machines of yesteryear. Why not to take modern components and marry them with the reliable and time-tested technologies of 8-bit computing?
It's that you need: CRISS CP/M - the modern single-board 8-bit full-featured personal computer without any pre-assembled boards!
Amazing functionality for the DIY device: it is not a toy, it is REAL Computer and the sophisticated control platform for your projects! DIP components only, single board.
CRISS CP/M is extremely easy for assembling: 8-bit Microchip AVR MCUs based, DIP components only (!), 100% open project, programmers and technical support website. Pocket-size box 140x110x35 mm, AC/DC module on the board. Just plug it to the power line, plugin standard VGA monitor or TV and PS/2 keyboard and start to enjoy it! Usually it takes 2 hours to solder PCB and launch the computer.
The completely open source design of the computer makes use of modern Microchip microcontrollers — the ATmega1284P emulates a Z80 CPU, an ATmega328P stands in as a peripheral controller, and the VGA controller makes use of ATmega328P and ATtiny13 chips. One of the modern conveniences is a ENC28J60 chip that serves as the Ethernet controller. 64 kilobytes of RAM is included. All chips are in DIP format, which makes it easier to trace signals and understand the inner workings of the computer, and also adds to the retro feel of the machine.
The monochrome VGA can display up to 80 by 25 characters, with five different character sets to choose from. A 160 by 96 pixel graphical mode is also available. With the CRISS CP/M running CP/M 2.2 right out of the box, a slew of programming languages, text processors, games, and business software can be used. For loading all of this software, there is another modern convenience available — an SD card reader provides the computer with mass storage.
The basic idea was to build really 8-bit computer that would use modern technologies and components and CRISS CP/M did it! Now AVR runs BASIC, TURBO PASCAL, C, FORTRAN etc., plays TETRIS, MINESWEEPER, LADDER and other games, makes text processing, runs spreadsheets and much more. CP/M software world is much wider than it is usually imagined and CRISS can "switch" the platform on the fly without rebooting! And CRISS CP/M doesn't have 7bit limit so regional characters are supported.
