The VM-TILT3D is a poorman's 3D tilt sensor board.
This breakout board is based on a metal ball 3D tilt sensor. The board includes the sensor itself, 4 mechanical mounting holes and a 7 pin un-populated 0.1" header connector from which one pin is the common and the 6 others represent one of the 6 possible orientations of the board in space so that in each orientation, only one of the 6 pins is short circuited to the common pin.
Unlike interfacing an accelerometer, this board is very straightforward and requires no settings, communication protocols or programming and can be either connected directly to low current hardware (up to 20mA and 12V), such as lighting an LED for each orientation or stopping the motor of a small robot when it flips over, or, through a microprocessor to achieve more sophisticated results.
