Single vacuum tube (3A5, twin triode) Radio driven by Lipo(3.7V) battery. This is a simple radio, receiving MW, not FM or SW.
I've made lots of semiconductor things, but indeed I've not made a tube Radio. I've known, the neck is high voltage for B-voltage (plate voltage) and in more than 30 years ago, high voltage battery was available but of course completely it disappeared now. I checked the feasibility of using voltage booster used in Nutube amplifier and I confirmed it is really suitable for radio application! No way!
Simple single Lipo battery operation. Lipo battery chargeable through on-board charger. Just connecting USB cable is enough to re-charge. No need to seek for very rare and expensive and short-life 12V battery or something.
Onboard voltage booster generate the required high voltage (plate voltage) for vacuum tube. I would say "high" but it is around 30V.
Simple but effective "reflex" circuit is employed. Please see some basic explanation in the movie below.
All of the parts except for Lipo battery are included in this kit. (unconnected, sole cell) Lipo battery is prohibited by international parcel regulation. This radio has USB terminal but USB bus power is NOT supported, and Lipo battery is indispensable!! Please find it at your local reseller. Any capacity more than 400mAh will be enough.
The receiving range of this radio is simply defined by resonator of variable capacitor (3 to 270pF) and ferrite bar antenna (400 uH). The resonance frequency is simply the receiving frequency and if your preferred radio station is out of range, please add capacitor in parallel or series (by simple calculation).
It is important and I would say again, Lipo battery cell (3.7V) is required to operate this radio. The cell is not USB power bank but cell itself. Please find it at your local reseller. Any capacity more than 400mAh will be enough.
A few meters of wires connecting to upper terminal of ferrite bar antenna on PCB will help some sensitivity. If your favourite station is too low volume, please add some wire!
