Read More…This is a set of Electronic Meter Probe Tip adapters that solve a number of problems associated with probing circuit board components. I originally designed these to make it easier to probe through the coating on circuit boards that were epoxied or sprayed with acrylic. After I put them into service I found that their non-slip properties were much more useful than the coating penetration ability. I make these adapters up in my home shop and they are prototypes.
1) The tip material is Tungsten Carbide and has very sharp multiple points arranged as an inverted cone which allows it to make a secure connection with all circuit board contact points.
2) The conventional approach to probing slippery targets is to have a very sharp point on a tip which can easily dull and is potentially dangerous. With the multiple points on this tip and its greater surface area it is not dangerous to skin penetration like the traditional tips. (See the picture where I have pushed the tip aggressively into my hand with no problem).
3) The tip is so sharp and hard that it will even make a non-slip contact with plate glass.
4) This tip is excellent for probing circuit board components which have been coated with sealer or epoxy. The tips can have a slight cutting action if twisted so they will cut through an epoxy coating or oxidation layer and make electrical contact with the pad or component which needs to be tested. On the other hand they are less damaging to component leads and pads than regular tips as these tips require much less force to hold in place and do not require multiple attempts to seat them. A secondary benefit of the lower force required to hold them in place is a great reduction in hand fatigue if a lot of testing is required.
5) The non-slip nature of the tip allows the probing of component leads, pads and test points that would be difficult with conventional tips. Due to the non-slip contact, two probes can be held with one hand if desired. This feature can be very useful if a voltage has to be monitored as a trimmer is adjusted with your other hand. Check out the pictures where I have probed a loose resistor, a capacitor on end as well as the vertical leads of power transistor. The problem of a probe slipping from a placement and shorting to nearby contacts is also much less likely.
6) The actual tips are easily replaced in the adapter should they be dropped and bent or broken. They are very hard but can be broken if dropped on glass, metal or a concrete floor. The adapter has a friction grip that holds the tip firmly but it can be removed by pulling it straight out. The recommended tips are available in four different sizes ranging from 0.6 mm to 1.2 mm. These adapters are sold with the 0.8 mm tip installed. A source for replacement tips will be provided with the purchase of an adapter set. Replacement Tips are available for $1 to $3 each depending on the vendor you use and the quality ordered. The tips are existing technology that has been repurposed for use as a meter probe tip and are readily available world wide. The adapter is designed to fit any standard meter probe with a 2 mm tip.
This is a new product and these are prototypes that I have made in my home shop so do not expect them to have a commercial polish to them. They are however safe and functional as described above. Each set will include a red and black adapter with a set of recommended carbide tips. If you are not satisfied with the Non-slip Adapters they can be returned for full refund within 2 weeks of receipt.
