Hello Lixie fans! We're now offering a modular base kit for the Lixie II that optionally includes a pre-configured WiFi clock controller! The seamlessly integrated, pre-configured ESP8266-based controller allows you to get a Lixie clock running without touching any code or solder! Just a few nuts, bolts and push-fit connectors to assemble one of your own in about 30 minutes using the included assembly guide. The clock is then powered with a Micro USB cable and quickly configured for your WiFi network (only once!) using your phone's browser. No special apps needed!
If you order a Powered Base Kit with a set of Lixies in the same transaction, we'll pre-assemble your PCB controller housing to one of your Lixies for you!
After studying hundreds of customers' Lixie projects for the last two years, we've seen that the majority of our customers ordered 4 or 6 Lixies to make an HH:MM or HH:MM:SS clock for their homes and offices. Being clock fanatics ourselves, we've crafted a highly capable clock controller that uses NTP over your WiFi network to keep very accurate time - which is totally unaffected by power outages - that includes many beautiful color modes that can be quickly accessed and customized without the need of special smartphone apps or confusing button combinations!
All of this is contained in a modular, 3D printed base design that uses a rugged texture to both avoid a 3D printed look, and reject fingerprints. Its neutral black color also won't clash with any nearby decorations or colors you set your Lixies to!

The Lixie II Base Kit uses two M3 screws and nuts (included) to connect each section together. The 4 outer screws of your Lixie II digits then screw down into the top of these sections and are connected using the included female jumper wires. The slack in the wires can be tucked away or wrapped around the interior screws, and the bases include supports for the included rubber feet.
The "Hourglass" clock controller circuit board is installed beneath your right-most Lixie, and uses that Lixie's mounting screws for its solder-less connection!
If you opt for the "No Controller" configuration, we'll print your base without the holes for the Hour and Hue buttons. Each base section also includes a punch-out hole at the back for adding your wiring for power!
Nothing, we promise! They are saved in a proprietary filesystem inside the clock controller and are never, EVER disclosed to ANYONE! For the extra cautious, you can look at both our open-source firmware HERE and the C++ library used to store credentials in the clock HERE. Your WiFi info is stored in the controller's internal flash memory, and only sent to your WiFi router on power-up in an encrypted WPA2-PSK handshake. (Learn more HERE)
If you ever want to clear your credentials from your clock, just hold the HOUR button down while plugging in the clock and wait for two long beeps to know that they are completely erased. It will then fail to connect to a network until configured again with your phone.

Yes, the Powered Base Kit is fully Open Source Hardware!
However - hear us out - we'd really prefer to make one for you.
We use special 3D printing techniques and hardware to achieve the textured look, and with each piece taking ~3.5 hours to print and using over 20 feet of 1.75mm filament, it's not a quick task for most users to create their own. (>21 hours print time and >100g of filament for a 6-digit clock) We are expanding a humble print farm just for these base kits right now, and your support helps us continue to innovate our methods and provide simple mounting solutions for other Lixie users.
While the Hourglass PCB doesn't use any dreadfully small SMT parts (0805 and larger), it does require careful alignment of the Wemos controller PCB that is reflow-soldered to pads of the main board to make sure things like 5V and GND don't get shorted together. It is also available for download on the GitHub repository linked above.
No problem! You can use the Arduino IDE and Lixie II library to easily write your own code to control the displays, and flash it to your Powered Base controller! Don't worry, you can always change your mind and go back to the original clock firmware at any time with the WIFI_NTP_CLOCK example in the Lixie_II library. Feel free to experiment and share your projects with us!
