To test and develop a program for microcontroller modules, they must be connected to power supply, has pull up or pull down resistors and conected to sensors. It is more convenient to do this on a breadboard.
Many ESP8266 modules (may bee all of them) has 2mm pin spacing is not breadboard friendly.
Soldering wires to the module and pin header is tricky and not so pretty.
On back side any pin can be pull-up, pull-down or directly connected to VCC or connected
