This is a very small, low-profile, step-down (buck) switching voltage regulator module. It's highly efficient, and can supply a fairly large amount of current without the need for a heatsink.
PLEASE NOTE: Maximum input voltage for this regulator is 18VDC.
The center 3 pins are pin-compatible with the popular 78xx series linear regulators: Input, Ground, and Output, so it can be used as a drop-in replacement. There are also two additional pins: the leftmost pin is "Enable", and can be used to shut down the regulator to save power when not in use. The rightmost pin is "Adjust", and can be used, along with an external resistor or potentiometer, to fine-tune the programmed output voltage.
A variety of popular programmed output voltages are available as options during purchase. The output voltage can also be raised or lowered with an external resistor connected between the "Adjust" pin and either Vout or Ground, or with a potentiometer. (Leaving the "Adjust" pin disconnected results in the programmed output voltage that you select during purchase.)
Although this device is fully protected against over-current and over-temperature fault conditions, always remember to use care when working with live circuits. Repeated shorting of the output, or over-voltage on the input, can damage the regulator module. A protective sheath of clear heat-shrink tubing has been added to help reduce the risk of touching regulator components while working, so the outside of the regulator is electrically isolated against accidental shorts.
