On the Breakout Arduino Boards series we are proud to present you the MiAU ("meow"): Mimimum Arduino Uno development board.
Based on the extremely popular ATMEGA328P, this board was designed to give you access to ALL the pins of this microcontroller while keeping a nice and small footprint for easy prototyping. This Dev Board will help you to embed the microcontroller on your next projects by avoiding taking for granted all the necessary components to run Arduino-based applications. The MiAU board is here with the bare minimum components to help you designing your next embedded systems.
But how? -you may ask. By understanding which components are essential before deciding to integrate the ATMEGA328P into your very own designs.
Similarly to our popular Nakeduino Board based on the ATMEGA32U4-MU, it comes crucial during the design process of small and reliable electronics projects. As part of the many advantages, the key points and why this board is going to help you, we have:
a. ICSP connections: you can load your code using an USBasp programmer. Keep in mind that the ATMEGA328P does not natively support USB communication, therefore you will need an external programmer for loading your codes.
b. Test a correct design of the RST circuit,
c. Clock signal generators: allowing you to test the best crystal and capacitors, test your resonator of choice and even overclock your board (* this requires the modification of fuses on the bootloader as explained by the very talented Joop Brokking here),
d. Test appropriate power supplies for the MCU and your own automatic voltage selector (USB or RAW Vcc),
The full kit of our MiAU board is shipped with high quality capacitors, crystal oscillator and headers. More importantly, the board comes loaded with the latest version of the Arduino Uno bootloader.
Obviously, the board includes and ICSP port ready to plug your USBasp programmer and load your codes. It is extremely important to clarify that low-speed programming is necessary in order to successfully load your codes. Since there exist a myriad of different USBasp programmers out there we cannot provide any support on the actual programming parameters for each programmer, however we can guarantee its functionality as programmed and tested with a USBasp programmer loaded with the latest version of Thomas Fischl's code.
The pin distribution of the PCB follows a logical sequence, both based on KiCAD's symbol pinout diagram and also on the pin functionality, leaving all the support pins on one side of the board and the I/O pins well distributed on the rest of the PCB. Additionally, if you do NOT want to populate the crystal and the capacitors you don't have to, simply leave them blank and connect them externally to the corresponding pins.
