After over a decade of development, the folks at Hive Mind (AKA - The Killer Bee Relay Team and Friends) have come up with a solution for those dark TR-505 displays. All you'll need is your TR-505, a screwdriver, a soldering setup, and some patience. This can also be used to add a backlight even if your screen isn't terrible!
You can find instructions for installation at THEKILLERBEERELAYTEAM.com, or in the video below.
Please watch the install video below (twice maybe?) before picking one of these up to make sure the project is something you'll be comfortable completing.
It's been great to see all of the photos and videos of TR505s and TR626s brought back to life by this mod!
That said, this is not the simplest project and - if executed improperly - there is a chance of damaging the functionality of the LCD screen itself, specifically when removing the reflective layer during disassembly. Removing anything more than the reflective backing could render the screen non-functional, and applying too much pressure on the LCD panel can cause it to crack or break, releasing the liquid crystal that allows it to function. The edges are also quite sharp and you can cut your fingers if you're not careful. Proceed at your own risk - and absolutely contact me directly if you have questions or are unsure of anything!
