What is it?

The FM type of YMF276 is OPN2C-L, which is an upgraded version of YM2612/YM3438. It adopts CMOS process and allows the use of universal i2s external 16-bit audio DAC, providing excellent sound quality.

Why did you make it?

I bought hundreds of YMF276s in 2021, so I needed a piece of hardware to test its functionality. The YMF276 MegaMod was the earliest MegaMod I designed in 2021, because it does not require an identification bit, it can be directly plugged into the OPN2 socket, and it can also play Mega Drive/Genesis music with the SN76489.

What makes it special?

The latest version of the design includes a proven i2s audio shifter, which can digitally amplify the volume to achieve lossless volume amplification. The volume of many FM Towns music is much lower than MD/Genesis, and the sound quality is poor when played with YM2612/3438, because OPN2/2C only has a built-in 9-bit DAC and the step noise is obvious at low volume. Using YMF276 does not have this problem at all.
