This is the 2021 eChallengeCoin. It is a challenge coin with 4 interactive challenges you solve using the LEDs, touch sensors, and the piezo buzzer. It also has 3 story challenges you solve through the UART interface, and a bonus to unlock.
It comes fully assembled and ready to challenge your skills! It uses a standard CR2032 coin battery (included) and comes in a protective coin case.
Everything about the eChallengeCoin provides clues and misdirection.
It even has 4 demos to help you pass the time when you are not working on the challenges.
Following the inaugural 2020 eChallengeCoin, I wanted to create a puzzle with new interactive challenges and a new installment from the Adventures of Sara Cladlow story challenge series.
If you are familiar with the traditional challenge coins - which signify a group of individuals or a significant event - then think of the eChallengeCoin as an electronic creation for anyone interested in technology, social engineering, InfoSec, or cyber security. Even if you are not in any of these roles, the eChallengeCoin is a pocket sized puzzle to test you skills.
Months of design and planning go into the annual eChallengeCoin. It's exhausting but I really like the challenge (pun?).
The 2021 eChallengeCoin is about the size of a traditional challenge coin and is designed to be carried around in a pocket. It's just 44mm in diameter and the case only adds 10mm. It fits easily in a pocket but is also worthy of display. It is very energy efficient and will run off a single standard CR2032 coin battery for several weeks.
... and it's not the first ...
The 2020 eChallengeCoin introduced The Adventures of Sara Cladlow. The 2021 eChallengeCoin brings the third story in the series.
In the story, Sara encounters challenges which you must solve to continue. The story is accessed through the coin's UART connection - using pads labeled TX, RX, and GND around the perimeter.
Details and a video about the UART interface eChallengeCoin are available on the AoSC website.
You can learn more about the 2021 eChallengeCoin at the website. Check out the "Getting Started" video as well as videos on the backshell and the new "skip" feature.
Note: the 2021 eChallengeCoin has a tiny piezo buzzer which is used for a few things. To make it fit, it needed to be very small. Because it’s very small, it doesn’t make much noise. Think of it like listening for the ocean in a conch shell.
Oh, I almost forgot. If you get a 2021 eChallengeCoin and attend DEF CON 29 (DC29) in person, you may find it helpful to take your puzzle with you ... just saying.
