It can talk to the Arduino software and run sketches just like the original. This board has been originally designed by Adafruit Industries. I ordered some PCBs for myself on OSH Park and got all the components and now I have a couple of those kits lying around. Get them while they're hot!
The cool thing about it is that you can plug it into a solderless breadboard, plug it into a wall outlet using a power adapter and start building!
The Boarduino comes as a kit that has to be assembled by yourself. This is an easy process that shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes if you're an experienced solderer. All through-hole parts are easy to solder so it can also be used to teach soldering (though if you really don't want to do it yourself, drop me a note and I'll assemble it for you).
This kits comes with all the parts needed to assemble it. It also comes with the ATmega328P chip, preprogrammed with the normal Arduino bootloader so you can start using it right away!
