The Automation/Irrigation Hat board aims to create a Smart irrigation and automation system using the raspberry PI capabilities.
The board is designed to work with the open source software Hydrosys4. With its web interface the system is easy to configure and offers a flexible irrigation scheduling , it supports automation functions and sensors data logging, it can send emails with reports and photo of your garden.
The Automation function can be used in conjunction with sensors to activate the relays according to specific sensor readings or time constraints, for example a heater can be activated for a number of minutes if temperatures is too low or a fan can be activated if temperature is high. Lights can be activated in a certain time of the day if the sunlight is low. etc. etc.
The irrigation function can be based on scheduled irrigation in which it is possible to select the day of the week and the time of the day when the relays activate. The Irrigation can also be based on soil moisture sensor readings (analog sensors).
With its modular design the system can support from 4 to 16 relays, if compared to other commercial smart irrigation systems, this one can be implemented with a fraction of the price.

The board includes the following parts:
NOTE: Even if this board includes the pins labelled with hygro1 to hygro4, they are not active.
The board is compatible with the Raspberry PI4, PI3 and Raspberry PI zero W.
The supported Relays board are 5vdc they are commonly available, for the specifications of the relay board connector please refer to the link at the end of this chapter.
The compatible valves are Normally closed type, latching valves are not supported.
The relays can be used to connect valves but also other equipment likes fans, heaters, etc.

The Hydrosys4 software uses the raspberry PI WiFi and a web interface to configure all the aspects of the system.
To install the Software all you need to know is how to write an .img file on a SD card, here the link to the Hydrosys4 installation and setting guide: SW Installation&Setting
The system implements direct internet connection between your devices and the Raspberry PI, no external servers are involved (unlike almost all the other automation systems in the market).
The system is simple to implement even for non technical people it does not require experience with Raspberry PI, programming and electronics, you need just a little bit of knowledge of how a switch works and how to connect valves to a power supply.
