HC-SR04 ultrasonic distance sensor is very popular in robotics. Basically, any object avoiding robot uses this sensor. And it is great of course, easy to use cheap and accurate but once you start building more complex robots you can start to see a problem and this problem is time. It takes a lot of time to measure distance with this sensor, there are some alternatives like sharp sensors that can detect objects super fast but output of them is binary so you can detect if there is an object within specified range but you don't know how far. For some robots those sensors are perfect but there is another problem - price. They are almost 10 times more expensive than HC-SR04. So here I started thinking about combining those two together. And I come up with an idea for a module that you can plug to the HC-SR04 and delegate the task of reading the distance to the Attiny microcontroller, output can be binary and your main microprocessor is relieved! Simple but beautiful solution and cheap at the same time :)
I want to use it in one of my next robotic projects, it will simplify programming and make my robot more accurate.
This is PCB only so you need rest of the components to build it, here is the BOM list:

My name is Nikodem Bartnik. I am maker so I like making things, making everything, but mainly electronics, robots, programs (applications, games and robots soft) for some time I also play with 3D printing. Everything that I made is public on the internet, on my youtube channel and on instructables. I recently set up Facebook fanpage so if you want to be up to date with what I am doing, or just support my work, go there and push that like button. If you are searching for more pro info about me check out my LinkedIn profile.
Project that I am most proud of is drone made from scratch by me, literally everything in this project is made by me. It was a huge challenge for me, but I like challenges, I am addicted to them :) Ludwik (that’s the name of my drone) won 3 prizes in international contests, 2 in Poland and a lot of people like this project a lot, huge thanks to them!
FollowBot it’s a robot that follows red objects i.e. ball. It do it by android app that I write (yes, I also program in java, sorry) it recognize red objects and drive to robot to be in same distance from the object. Sounds simple? Nothing more wrong! As with the drone, huge huge challenge for me, but I didn’t give up, only weak people are giving up!
All of my construction together won 10 contests 7 from that was international. They were published on famous sites like Make Magazine, Adafruit, Atmel Makers, Arduino.cc. On instructables I have 872 000 views and on my youtube channel 338 000 views.
I am really creative person (sometimes even too much), hard working (sometimes even too much) and obstinate (It's probably even good). I definitely have more ideas than time to realize them all, even though I work almost all the time. My todo list already has 4 pages.
