This is an 8x8 Bi-color (Red & Green) LED Matrix (60mm x 60mm) Driver Module DIY Kit.
The LED Matrix Driver Module is driven by 2 MAX7219 ICs and is suitable for use with most micro-controllers including the popular Arduino open source hardware.
Basic soldering skill is required to assemble the kit as it is designed using only through-hole electronics components.
Assembled LED Matrix Driver Modules can be chained together to make up a longer display.
More detail on this kit including assembly can be found at http://jollifactory.blogspot.sg/2013/08/bi-color-led-matrix-driver-module-diy.html
Although this kit is not designed for use on any specific micro-controller, it can easily be adapted to mount onto any Arduino footprint compatible board. This information is available at http://jollifactory.blogspot.sg/2013/09/mount-bi-color-led-matrix-driver-module.html
Currently, the price disparity of the MAX7219 chip from various suppliers is too great. This chip is available on ebay and some other online stores for a third or less than those from reputable suppliers.
Check out other people's views on the wide price disparity at http://tronixstuff.com/2013/05/16/the-max7219-led-display-controller-real-or-fake/
Although it would be great for all the parts to be included in the kit for completeness, we decided not to include this part in the kit.
We do have some lots of the cheap MAX7219 ICs we bought from online stores but not a single one have failed for those we used. We will include 2 of these MAX7219 ICs for *FREE* with each kit you purchased. However, if you are not 'comfortable' having these ICs, please input in the Additional Instruction Box not to include these ICs during Check Out.
Note that these MAX7219 ICs for *FREE* and we will not replace them if they are found to be faulty.
Project to build a 7 Bi-color LED Matrix long Scrolling Text Display is available at http://jollifactory.blogspot.sg/2013/09/7-bi-color-led-matrix-scrolling-text.html.This project uses the excellent LedControl library that has been specifically written for the MAX7219 which greatly simplifies the Arduino sketch.
Another project to build an Arduino Bluetooth 7 Bi-color LED Matrix long Scrolling Text Display is available at http://www.instructables.com/id/Arduino-SPI-7-Bi-color-LED-Matrix-Scrolling-Text-D/. This project uses Arduino hardware SPI lines for instruction and data transfer to the display and offers impressive text scrolling effect.
