FTDI is a a technology to convert USB to serial. Nowadays computers don't use serial 'output/input' to connect to other devices, but here we are at low level, in particular to TTL level (Transistor-Transistor Logic). TTL is the type of device interface used for connections. Which are the I/O pins of a FTDI? DTR RXI TXO 5V CTS GND What is FT232RL? It's the chip!
In simple terms, you need it to connect a board like an Arduino to your pc or notebook and then communicate with the board with a terminal shell.
This FTDI support 5v and 3.3v board, like the Arduino Uno or Mini. Note that USB connector is 'mini' type.
