Connect this tiny charge monitor board to your battery and see in real time how much charge you have left, when you should charge your battery and if it’s time to power down your project. Plus, use it to make sure you don’t store your battery long term at a voltage which will degrade it. The circuitry is set up to monitor a single (1S) 3.7V nominal LiPo (LiPoly) pack with a peak battery charge of 4.2V and accepts input voltages up to 5V. Charge state is visually relayed to you using five multicolored LEDs. The indicated levels of charge are: BLUE = 3.9V, GREEN = 3.7V, YELLOW = 3.5V, ORANGE = 3.3V, RED = less than 3.3V. The LEDs are diffused as not to create a blinding situation.
The corresponding LEDs are illuminated when the battery voltage is above the set threshold. As the voltage in the battery drops, so does the number of illuminated LEDs. The RED LED has a hysteresis of 200mV and will remain illuminated until the voltage has reached 3.3V; it will become illuminated once again at 3.1V. This is done to provide voltage headroom when under load and to reduce deep cycling of the pack which can reduce the overall lifespan. Many LiPo batteries have built-in voltage cutoffs that trigger around 2.9V to 3.1V.
The jumper (JP1) can be installed to shut down the voltage monitor circuitry and reduce the overall current draw from the battery. A battery pack and/or load output can be connected at either (J1) or (J2) using a JST 2mm connector or discrete wire which makes voltage monitoring while under load simple.
