This pack comes fully assembled and includes: (1) LiPo Charge Module, (1) Boost Converter Module, (4) M2 x 20mm hex screws, (8) 5mm spacers, and (4) M2 hex nuts. At only 13mm in height and less than 25mm square, this configuration offers the most compact form factor from our modular charging and booster system. To maximize the input and output options available to you, we have left the back row of headers on each board unpopulated. This allows you to add headers (2.54mm), discrete wire, or terminal blocks (2.54mm) as needed.
The LiPo Charge Module utilizes the MCP73838 and can charge both Li-Poly and Li-Ion chemistry packs. Charge current can be configured by solder jumper for 100mA or 500mA when using the Micro USB to any computer or USB wall adapter. By using the secondary 5V DC input and adjusting a resistor, the charge current can be configured from 15mA up to 1A. Due to thermal constraints charge currents above 500mA are supported but not guaranteed. A few more of the integrated features include: autonomous charge source selection, charge status feedback and LEDs, configurable charge safety timer, output load disconnect, and optional battery temperature monitoring. Autonomous source selection allows for USB and a secondary DC source to be connected and disconnected without an interruption to charging. When present, the secondary DC source takes priority over the USB source.
The Voltage Booster Module utilizes the newly released MP3414A from Monolithic Power Systems and is designed to supply a 5V, 1A output while achieving up to 97% efficiency. The converter can be shut down by installing a jumper at (JP1) or by wiring a toggle switch into (JP1) using the available header allowing for remote operation of the circuitry. In addition, there is a 3.3V output with up to 300mA, so you can supply multiple power rails simultaneously without having to compromise between voltages or use another voltage converter. The 3.3V LDO makes use of the TLV73333 from Texas Instruments and features a low dropout voltage of 122mV at 300mA. In the same way as the 5V converter, the 3.3V LDO can be disabled by installing a jumper or wiring in a switch at (JP2).
A low battery alert has been integrated to monitor the input voltage anytime the 5V output is active. The circuit has an input threshold of 3.1V and will illuminate a yellow LED to alert the user that it is time to power down and recharge. If the low battery monitor is not needed or when operating from a voltage source lower than the threshold of 3.1V, it can be disabled by removing jumper (JP3). Board includes three reusable shunts to make or break jumper connections.
Although compact, this system is designed to be powerful and is capable of both supplying and drawing high levels of current. For proper operation and safety, always check that your battery is rated for the charge current delivered and that the power supply can deliver the needed current. † The PROG2 (SJ1) and TE (SJ2) options are configured by using a solder jumper which consists of three separate pads. VIN or Logic High is the upper pad, indicated by a circle just to the left of the pad and GND or Logic Low is the bottom pad. The middle pad is tied to either VIN or GND using a solder bridge. Avoid solder bridging across all three pads as this will create a shorted condition.
