It essentially is a "display with a built-in keyboard" that you can connect to any Mini PC via HDMI. Think of it as a laptop shell, where the "brain" (the CPU) lives outside of the case.
#### Why did you make it?
Mainly to cut down on my own electronic waste, but maybe also yours. Every time I needed a more powerful laptop, I had to replace the entire device - even though the screen, keyboard, and enclosure were still perfectly fine. With this laptop, you can simply upgrade your computing power by swapping out the Mini PC, while keeping the same display, keyboard, and housing.
Another possible use case is for portable gaming setups. If you’re a gamer who likes to bring your system around, this could make that easier. I’m still figuring out what gamers might want in terms of keyboard feel and layout — so if you’d like a version with a different keyboard, send me a message! I’d love to explore that option.
#### What makes it special?
Instead of building a proprietary modular CPU system, I designed it to work with any off-the-shelf Mini PC. Mini PCs today are incredibly affordable yet powerful, so you can get desktop-class performance on a small budget.
Most modular laptop projects (like Framework or MNT Reform) integrate the CPU into their ecosystem, which drives up costs, sometimes the CPU module alone costs more than a whole new laptop.
With this approach, you still get modularity and upgradability, but without the high price tag.
#### Specification:
Display specification: 5.5 inch with Real/Honest 1920x1080 resolution and HDMI input
Overall Size: 212mm x 140mm x 37mm
#### Pro Tip:
I recommend getting your Mini PC from a local supplier or reseller. Used and or refurbished Dell, HP and Lenovo/Thinkcentre Mini PCs are often sold very cheaply and they usually come with solid build quality and decent performance. Just take care that they have a HDMI output and you are ready to go.
#### Questions and Answers - Q&A:
1) Do you offer a version with batteries? Unfortunately, most mini PCs consume quite a bit of power, and the batteries would need to supply that as well. However, if that’s something you’re really interested in, feel free to message me - we can explore what might be possible.
2) Do you offer a version with a touchpad? I personally don’t use touchpads, so I didn’t include one in the design. That said, if there’s enough demand for it, I’d be happy to consider creating a version with a touchpad. Let me know if you’d like that!
3) Do you offer a version with a bigger display? A larger display version would likely increase the total cost to around $300 USD, which feels a bit pricey to me. Still, if you think that’s reasonable, send me a message - I’d love to hear your thoughts.
